Founded in January 1998, OXYGEN – Green Party – is a political organization of independent citizens that look forward
to construct an alternative against corruption with a defined ecological and pacifist vocation.
Ingrid Betancourt, elected congresswoman from PVO
Conducted by Ingrid Betancourt, (congresswoman that fought for the political judgement of President Ernesto Samper for his drug
campaign financing), OXYGEN´s list to the Senate in 1998 elections obtained the highest voting in the country electing two Senators for
the period 1998-2002. The fight for a radical political reform through a referendum, that would render the
political expression of more than 60% of Colombians, has been the main project hoisted by OXYGEN. Such proposal joins today the
majority of the independent political forces in Colombia.
After a rigorous process of selection of candidates, OXYGEN –Green
Party – participated for the first time in local elections in October 2000. It attained the city mayors of San Vicente del Caguan (peace process
zone between FARC guerrillas and government representatives) with Nestor Leon Ramirez, and Tota with Jaime Gomez; as well as several
councilmen among which stands out Ramon Carbó in Barranquilla the country's third city with two million inhabitants.
OXYGEN –Green Party- has confronted from the Senate the application of the United States Plan Colombia and has denounced the lethal
impact of the utilization of the Fusarium Oxisporum in the eradication of coca plantations in the Amazon region. Proposes the manual
eradication by farmers of these plantations and the opening of just markets for its substitute products.
Solidarity with the UWA community is one of the most important issues that OXYGEN –Green Party- proposes today. Such community is
fighting against the multinational OXY and the Colombian government for the discontinuing of oil exploration in the sacred UWA territory.
OXYGEN –Green Party- since September 1999, is a member of the Federation of Green Parties of the Americas.
